The controversial issue of light pollution a 15 year old perspective light pollution has been debated by scientists and environmentalists for years these are issues that affect the natural environment wildlife and human health as a 15 year old i feel strongly about this issue and want to share my perspective on the controversial issue of light pollution on the one hand artificial light has its benefits it allows you to stay work or study at night provides a sense of security at night and makes our cities and towns better however on the other hand excessive artificial light has some negative effects on the environment one of the biggest problems with light pollution is its impact on the environment animals and plants thrive depending on the natural pattern of light and darkness when we introduce artificial light into their habitat it can disrupt their natural rhythms and cause them to behave in ways that are harmful to their survival for example birds that migrate at night can be distracted by bright lights and fly into buildings or other obstacles this can cause injury or death of the bird light pollution also affects our ability to see the stars too much artificial light in the sky can drown out the gray light of stars and other celestial bodies this is a problem for astronomers and stargazers alike because it limits our ability to study the night sky and appreciate its beauty another problem related to light pollution is its effect on human health exposure to artificial light at night has been linked to several health problems including sleep disturbances and an increased risk of certain cancers the blue light emitted by electronic devices is particularly harmful because it can interfere with the body's production of melatonnin a hormone that helps regulate sleep despite these negative effects many people see artificial light as a necessity it allows you to work and play at night and makes our cities and towns healthier and more beautiful however there are steps we can take to reduce the negative effects of light pollution one approach is to use more efficient lighting technology such as led lighting these lights are more energy efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs and can be programmed to emit light only where and when it is needed this can help reduce the amount of light pollution in our towns and cities while providing the light needed for safety and productivity another approach is to promote the use of dark sky lighting this lighting is designed to reduce light pollution by directing light towards the sky instead of the sky this type of lighting can be used in public places such as parks and parking lots as well as installed in private residences in conclusion the conflicting issues surrounding light pollution are complex and require careful consideration while we appreciate the benefits of artificial light we must also be aware of its negative effects on the environment and human health by using more efficient lighting technology and promoting dark sky lighting we can reduce this negative impact and create a more sustainable and healthy world for ourselves and the nature around us
